How To Reset An EnGenius Switch Via The Console Port

Sometimes you need to start fresh and reset your switches to factory default maybe because you forgot the IP address or password or maybe the switch will not boot the current firmware. You can try using the hardware factory reset button on the front of the switch but it can be tricky to hold the button for the correct amount of time.

The old school console reset method will always work and lets you see exactly what is happening on the switch. I tried this on the ECS2512FP Cloud managed switch but all the current EnGenius switches should be similar. Every EnGenius switch ships with a white console cable in the box. You will need a 9 pin rs232 serial port to connect it to I used this one https://amzn.to/3nyp7JN. Next download puTTY and use the following settings replacing COM3 with your serial port.

Next login to the switch with username admin and the password you set (default is password) and issue the following command

This will reset your switch to factory default.

You can also use the console to troubleshoot boot issues and load new firmware if your image is corrupt.

Bad Cell Coverage? Use Wi-Fi Calling!

With may people than ever working from home bad cell coverage is a huge issue. The best way to get around bad cell coverage at your home is by having great Wi-Fi.

If you want to use Wi-Fi calling the most important thing is to have full coverage and good signal quality in and around your home. Wi-Fi calling does not need high throughput but it does require good quality of service so you calls are not dropped. You are not going to get this from your Internet service providers wireless router.

What you need is multiple Wi-Fi 6 access points like the Ruckus R550 or the Engenius ECW230 most homes will need 2 to 3 wired in to provide full coverage with great Wi-Fi.

The Ruckus cloud goes a step further and allows you to enable a Wi-Fi calling profile and apply it to a SSID.

This will give Wi-Fi calling traffic higher QOS priority so if someone is uploading a big file or gaming your call will not have reduced quality.

You can also pull analytics reports and see how much traffic is going over Wi-Fi calling and from which devices.

You can enable Wi-Fi calling on both IOS and Android devices. On the iPhone you go into the cellular setting menu and enable it. It will ask for your location for 911 emergency’s and that is it.

EnGenius Cloud Managed ECW260 Wi-Fi 6 Outdoor Access Point Range Testing

I did a quick outdoor range test of the ECW260 Wi-Fi 6 Access Point. I mounted mid way up a tree and connected to a ECS2512FP multi gigabit PoE switch I was able to link at 2.5Gb over 75 feet of cat5e.

At 20 feet away I was able to get over 400Mbps with my iPhone 12 Pro associated to the 5.8Ghz radio

Then at 200 Feet from the AP with line of sight I was able to get almost 100Mbps.

I can see from the cloud client timeline feature that my iPhone switched to the 2.4Ghz radio during the 200 foot test. Because of the terrain and buildings I was not able to test further but the ECW260 should be able to provide usable Wi-Fi at nearly twice this distance line of sight.

The ECW260 is available here https://www.keenansystems.com/store/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=612

EnGenius ECW260 Cloud Managed Wi-Fi 6 Outdoor Access Point Review

The ECW260 is one of the first affordable outdoor Wi-Fi 6 Access Points available. The ECW260 is 2×2 mimo and has a 2.5Gb ethernet port with 802.3at PoE support. The ECW260 comes with pole and wall mounting hardware.

The ECW260 is managed by the no cost EnGenius cloud you simply scan the barcode with the app and it adds it to your cloud dashboard. You can deploy and monitor a Wi-Fi network remotely!

The ECW260 would be great for high density outdoor Wi-Fi like school or church parking lots. You could also use 2 units in mesh mode between buildings for a high speed bridge.

I did some close range speed testing with a iPhone 12 Pro using speedtest.

Next I ran a iperf test against a server on the iPhone 12 Pro with 8 parallel streams.

I saw a maximum of 822Mbps combined.

The ECW260 does not ship with a PoE injector you can use the EPA5006GR https://www.keenansystems.com/store/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=614

But to get the most out of the ECW260 you will want to use a multi gig 2.5Gb PoE switch like the ECS2512FP https://www.keenansystems.com/store/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=48&products_id=597

We have the ECW260 in stock today here https://www.keenansystems.com/store/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=612

EWS377AP V3 4×4 Wi-Fi 6 Access Point Testing

I did a quick performance test of the new EWS377AP Version 3 There have been some minor revisions including a new ethernet chipset and more memory. These upgrades should allow the EWS377AP to handle more connection in highly dense business environments.

The EWS377AP is heaver than the V1 and has a larger aluminum heat sync on the back.

I connected the EWS377AP to my ECS2512FP 2.5Gb PoE switch and then configured the EWS377AP for channel 149 with 80Mhz channel width using the enwifi app.

I then did a speed test with my iPhone 12 pro on my 1 Gb down 40M up Internet connection.

If I run speed test on a wired station I get about 940M down so this is not far off.

The lights flash like crazy during a speedtest.

Lastly I ran jperf a graphical iperf client with 8 parallel stream to my iPhone 12 pro iperf server.

I saw a maximum combined throughput of 1,077Mbps on one of the runs not too shabby.
